This Cockatiel Exhibition is sponsored by the Northeast Regional Cockatiel Exhibitors. A partnership between NERCE and SIBC organizations has made it possible to include the Northeast Regional Cockatiel Show at the 2002 fall Staten Island Bird Mart.
The show is affiliated with the National Cockatiel Society at an A Level. Show morning Entry Registration will be 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM. Judging will begin at 9:00 AM with the competition ending by 4:00 PM. There is a fee to enter your cockatiels in the show: $4.00 each for the first 5 birds and $2.00 each there after (Special Northeast Regional Group Member rate applies...).
The judge presiding for the day is Clarence Culwell from Springtown, Texas. Clarence has been raising birds since about 1950. He started with American Parakeets which he bred for several years. A pair of Zebra Finches were added which really caught his interest and have been a priority ever since. Clarence has kept and bred so many kinds of finches that they are too numerous to name. He has had cockatiels, love birds, senegals, conures, parrolets, and cockatoos. One of his friends said that if it had feathers, Clarence liked it. That is certainly true, because birds have always been a part of his life.
Clarence started showing birds and enjoyed the competition and friendships that he made. Some of his dearest friends are people he has met in the bird world. He started judging birds due to the encouragement he received from people like Ray Johnson and Charles Anchor. These two gentlemen taught him a lot, for which he is very grateful. Clarence has no idea how many shows he has judged. Among these were finches and hookbills at the Kansas City National, hookbills at the Manchester National, finches at the 50th National in Chicago in 1998, and finches at the Kaytee Great American.
Clarence enjoys all activities having to do with birds; however, he says that it is the truly great people he has met along the way that really makes this hobby an enjoyable pastime.
We're honored to have Clarence, be sure to welcome him and thank him for being our Cockatiel Judge.
