Meet the Judge
(in Wendy's own words)

My life with birds started in Fayetteville, NC in 1984 with a parakeet from the local pet store. I lost Angel-birdie a few short weeks later. I was devastated by the loss. My lack of knowledge and availability of a good avian vet, led to my sweet little bird's loss of life. I realized I had purchased a sick bird. It was because of that, I swore to only buy from a reputable breeder to ensure the bird's health.

I had my first encounter with a Cockatiel that same year at a Laundromat I frequented at the time. Packy, a male Lutino Cockatiel entertained me as my laundry washed & dried. That was it, I had to have a male Lutino Cockatiel. I found a local breeder and went to buy my Lutino male and went home with a Normal Hen. Go figure. Godzilla (Zilly for short) was everything I could ever have dreamed of in a pet. With in a couple of weeks I was back to the breeder for a mate. The rest is history.

Having been "bitten" by bird-a-holism, I could not have enough birds, cages, toys, books, magazines or anything bird related!! My breeder friend introduced me to the American Cockatiels Society (ACS) and then the new National Cockatiel Society (NCS). All I knew was I wanted to learn everything I could about birds and share that information with others so that they would not have to suffer the pain of losing a beloved member of the family. I joined both societies and the American Budgerigar Society. When I moved to Rhode Island, I became active in the only bird club at the time, the Rhode Island Budgerigar Society (RIBS). This is where I was introduced to bird shows.

Although I was a member of RIBS and did have several budgies, my love was with the Cockatiel. I attended every show I could and met more & more "bird people." I moved to Pennsylvania and became very active in showing. It was then that I decided I wanted to become a judge in the NCS. By 1995, I was a judge for the NCS. I have enjoyed visiting the many cities around the country and meeting old and new bird friends.

My flock at it's largest point was over 200 Cockatiels, several pairs of African Grey Parrots, a pair of Citron cockatoos and Buster my Yellow Naped Amazon Brat. Due to a terrible house fire in 1999, I lost several breeding pairs of African Greys. And a move to the Midwest caused me to thin my flock down even more. I now have 12 Cockatiels (more on the way), 12 African Grey parrots, the pair of Toos and Buster.

Please come and introduce yourself to me, for it is only through sharing, that we really ever learn.

We're honored to have Wendy, be sure to welcome her and thank her for being our Cockatiel Judge.
